 Background Story

After the events of A New Hope, which saw Obi-wan cross into the Netherworld of the Force, he finally reunited with his old masters, Qui-Gon, Yoda, Mace Windu, and others. He looked to Qui-Gon and commented to him, “You’ve been busy.” — referring to Qui-Gon’s teachings about Jedi immortality. The lot of them had learned from Qui-Gon how to exist in this world, and project themselves into the living world as well.

After the events of Return of the Jedi, when Anakin finally crossed over, the group would welcome him into their ranks.  Anakin would go on to join them in teaching Luke Skywalker the ways of the Jedi from the Cosmic Force.  They learned to navigate it, live in it, and project within and around it.  Obi-wan would often project his old hut in Tatooine as his “home” within the Cosmic Force.  There, Anakin would often join him along with Qui-Gon.  Yoda would often project his hut in Dagobah as his ethereal home, and they’d go visit each other.

When Luke decided to train his sister Leia, Obi-wan thought it was a mistake. He didn’t feel Leia should be pulled from her interests in the Senate. He was protective of Leia, much more so than with Luke.  Anakin wanted both his children to be trained in the ways of the Jedi.  The two often argued about it until one day, Leia herself would cease her own training path. A vision she touted as the reason.  This was disturbing to Anakin. He feared that his young grandson may befall his same fate.

Obi-wan counseled Anakin against making those connections with the boy without first making amends with Leia herself. Anakin believed that to be a futile task as Leia refused to learn how to commune with Force Ghosts.  She would ask Luke if their father was “part of the Cosmic Force”. When Luke would answer truthfully, saying he was, Leia would get angry and refuse to learn this power, on the off chance that it would mean ever speaking with Anakin.  Qui-Gon agreed with Obi-wan and told Anakin it would be disrespectful to commune with little Ben against his mother’s wishes. Anakin would eventually agree.

When Ben Solo turned, becoming Kylo Ren, it was far too late for Anakin to try to connect to his grandson. The Emperor Palpatine, using his puppet Snoke, would cast Dark Shroud on Ben, keeping out all the light.  Force Commune would be unable to penetrate that darkness. This infuriated Anakin because he felt he had his shot when Ben was younger and now he had been locked out. Obi-wan and Qui-Gon agreed that perhaps they had made an error but that there was nothing they could do about it now.  For Anakin, his heart was further broken when his son Luke decided to cut himself off from the Force as a result of the events of his Jedi Temple, at the hand of his nephew.  Anakin knew, just knew, it hadn’t been Ben and now he couldn’t tell Luke.

Anakin would try and try and try to reach Ben and Luke both, and often thought he might have gotten through, but alas to no avail.  Obi-wan would often try to comfort Anakin during this time, and would also try to reach Luke himself, alongside Anakin. But their Cosmic Force energy was just not able to penetrate through to either Luke or Ben.

However, Obi-wan did connect with Leia herself, right after the death of Han Solo.  Leia was at her most vulnerable. Leia could not believe her eyes. There he was, the great Grandmaster Jedi, Obi-wan Kenobi.  She couldn’t help but let her guard down.  She told him that she did not want “him” to ever show up like this, meaning Anakin.  Obi-wan tried to counsel her, tell her that Anakin was not the dark figure in a mask that she remembered. But Leia, in the middle of her grief about her dear husband and the actions of her own son, refused to see any good in Anakin… quite the contrary, she blamed it all on Anakin.

Obi-wan understood the pain Leia was in. Leia begged Obi-wan to help her once again. She wanted to talk to her brother, Luke. To tell him that she was sending Rey and Chewie to see him. She thought that if Obi-wan could project himself to her, that he could do the same with Luke.  Obi-wan told her that Luke was also in pain, a lot of pain, and he had cut himself off from the Force.  Leia refused to believe it. She demanded to know why he was in such pain and when Obi-wan refused to tell her, she made the conviction that she would connect with him her darn self!  When Obi-wan told her that only more pain she would find in that quest, Leia made effort to close the “window” to the Cosmic Force.  Obi-wan was unable to reconnect with her from that moment on. But Leia, determined as ever, would eventually do exactly as she said she would and connect through millions of lightyears to her brother during the events of The Last Jedi.

Obi-wan would then help Qui-Gon proliferate this Force Transcendence, Force Commune, and Force Ghost powers to others, eventually joining Anakin Skywalker when Ahsoka Tano died and teaching her how to transcend. Now Obi-wan and the rest of the Force Ghosts will help and guide Ben Solo and Rey to build a new generation of Jedi.

INT. TATOOINE, LARS HOMESTEAD, LIVING ROOM – COSMIC FORCE

The Lars Homestead living room looks just as it did when LUKE was young and living with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. LUKE SKYWALKER, OBI-WAN KENOBI, QUI-GON JINN, AND ANAKIN SKYWALKER stand in the living room in the middle of a heated debate.

LUKE SKYWALKER
(commanding)
We need to retake Coruscant and rebuild the Jedi Temple
right in the heart of the galaxy for all to see.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
Luke is right. The people need to see the Jedi
as a symbol of hope once again.
(beat)
It will help those of us in hiding feel
comfortable to come back to the Order.

QUI-GON JINN
(sighs)
Building a temple is not the top priority.
(beat)
What we need is to re-establish the Order, anew.
And to do that we need younglings to train.

LUKE SKYWALKER
We don’t have the Masters available to train them.
Ben and Rey are certainly not there yet.

QUI-GON JINN
Valid point.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
And where do you think we should start to look for them?

ANAKIN SKYWALKER
Cal Kestis.
(beat)
When I met him, yes I was Darth Vader, but he
was quite formidable. As was his master Cere Junda.
(beat)
I know he’s still alive and surely by now he’s at
Master rank, at least. If we find him first, he would know
where the other Force sensitives are.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
I remember Cere.
(beat, rubs chin)
Formidable indeed.

QUI-GON nods his head in agreement while LUKE shakes his head in opposition.

LUKE SKYWALKER
(frustrated)
No, we need to exert our presence and retake
the capital planet, not chase after what-ifs.

OBI-WAN KENOBI
If we show our strength by retaking Coruscant, it’ll put
First Order remnants on their back foot.
(beat)
They’re all but destroyed and we have
them on the run. Now is the time.

QUI-GON JINN
But the symbol of the Jedi is it’s people, not it’s buildings!
(beat)
Look around you. We have no one. It’s not like we have the
Jedi Army behind us to help us, like we did back then.
(beat)
The First Order, while beaten, isn’t broken.
They have an army and we don’t.
